LOCATION
Getting here
Kirkenes Airport is the one we mostly use. There is an airport also in Båtsfjord, only 45 min. away by car, but with the flight changes etc. and the cost, we mostly prefer to use Kirkenes Airport even though it is 2.5 hours drive by bus or car.
Oslo Gardermoen Airport is serviced from low-cost airlines such as norwegian.com and Ryanair from most European points of embarkation. However, you need to book your ticket onwards to Kirkenes on either norwegian.com (cheapest option) or flysas.com, preferably the early morning flights 08.10 (Norwegian) or 08.50 (SAS). There will be a bus from Kirkenes Airport to Tana Bru, but please get in touch with us to check if we may be available to pick you up in Tana Bru or other places.
Both SAS and norwegian.com offer direct flights from almost all of Europe, as well as LA, NY, and Orlando in the US. The best low-cost long-haul option from the USA seems to be Norse Atlantic, a Norwegian company with a low-cost pricing approach for transatlantic flights, but you then need to fly Norwegian or SAS onwards to Kirkenes. And of course, there are a multitude of international airlines offering Oslo as a destination. Also, the best flight options from the UK and Europe are covered through norwegian.com and Ryanair. Finnair connects Asia and Europe via Helsinki directly to Kirkenes, so this may also be a good option. The Finnish airport in Ivalo, northern Finland, is also quite close, and it may be cheaper to rent a car there, so worth looking into.
Travel plan
The route by air, with starting and ending your journey in Oslo, is not the only option. There are flights to Kirkenes from Bergen, Trondheim, Tromsø and Alta as well, and you may book your ticket all the way by Norwegian or SAS from global destinations. It may also be a good idea to use Star Alliance bonus points to fly to Kirkenes for only 10,000 points for the domestic Norwegian segment for a return trip.
